Streets and Parks Maintenance

The streets and parks maintenance department maintains all city streets, parks, buildings, grounds and turf. The street department sweeps and regularly maintains 64 miles of city streets. The parks department takes care of more than 200 acres of city parkland. Common resident questions and answers are below. Street or park issues can also be reported on the city's online reporting service.

County roads issues should be reported directly to Hennepin County at hennepin.us/residents/transportation/report-a-problem. County roads include Bass Lake Road, 42nd Avenue, Medicine Lake Road and Winnetka Avenue (between Bass Lake Road and Medicine Lake Road).

Can I request a new stop sign, other traffic control sign, or a modification to an existing sign?
Yes. The City of New Hope policy enables residents to request the placement or alteration of a traffic control sign. To begin the process, a resident must complete a traffic control request application and petition. When a petition is received the police chief, public works director and city engineer will investigate the request. If that investigation reveals that a traffic problem does not exist no further action will be taken. If the findings of the investigation verify a traffic problem does exist the public works director will prepare a report containing the findings and make a recommendation to the City Council. The City Council will consider action on the request at a regular meeting.
Who do I call to report a street light outage?
In most circumstances Xcel Energy maintains the street lights in New Hope. More information can be found on the Street Lighting web page.
When does the city sweep the streets?
Streets are swept once in the spring and once in the fall. Areas near priority bodies of water like Northwood Lake and Meadow Lake are swept more frequently.
Why is there so much snow in my driveway?
The plows have no control over how much snow is placed in resident driveways. The volume will vary depending on the amount of snowfall. Some residents may have more snow plowed into their driveway than their neighbors, this is because of the drifting of snow prior to plowing, or because of how the plows operate. Plow drivers have no control over how much snow is piled at resident driveways, and it is the resident's responsibility to remove piled snow from driveways.
What do I do if the city snow plow damaged my boulevard?
Please call public works at 763-592-6777 to report the issue along with your name and address. Public works will schedule the repair for early summer.
What do I do if the snow plow knocked over my mailbox?
Call public works at 763-592-6777 to report the issue or use the city's online reporting system. The street supervisor will assess the damage to determine if the mailbox was damaged by a mechanical piece of the snow plow or if the mailbox was damaged by the weight of the snow. Most mailbox damage is from the lack of maintenance, such as a rotted post. Residents are responsible for clearing snow that piles in front of the mailbox post.
Why do I receive more snow in my yard on a cul-de-sac than my neighbors?
Most cul-de-sacs have limited snow storage with driveways, mailboxes and fire hydrants occupying most of the possible snow storage areas. Because of limited storage in some yards, other homes do receive more snow. Plow drivers are responsible for getting all of the snow off of the street.
When is the city going to spray the weeds at our neighborhood park?
The city hires a licensed private contractor to spray for weeds at least once a year. To report weed issues please use the city's online reporting system.
Who do I call to report playground equipment that needs repair?

When does the city pick up the trash at my neighborhood park?

Please call the public works department at 763-592-6777 or by using the city's online reporting system to report the location of an overflowing trash can in the park.
