The New Hope Human Rights Commission has up to 10 members, including up to two students from Independent School District 281. Adult members serve two-year terms, and student members serve one academic year (Sept. 1–Aug. 31).

The commission works with the Minnesota Department of Human Rights to promote equal opportunity in housing, employment, public accommodations, public services and education. It also works to foster an inclusive community where everyone is treated fairly and with respect.

The commission advises the City Council on human rights laws, issues, policies and programs. At the direction of the City Council, the commission provides educational opportunities to help residents learn about federal and state human rights laws and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). It also partners with local organizations, agencies and other human rights commissions to promote inclusion, address discrimination and support equal opportunities so all residents and visitors can fully participate in community life.
Human Rights Commission Mission
The Human Rights Commission (HRC) protects and promotes the respect, dignity and rights of all individuals and groups by serving as a bridge between the community and local government. The commission works to create an inclusive environment where every individual can fully participate in community life by focusing on several key responsibilities, including:
- Developing both education and social opportunities within the community to foster understanding and respect amongst diverse populations,
- Serving as a resource for residents seeking information on public services involving equal treatment, and
- Working with our local government to ensure all residents are treated fairly without discrimination.
