Posted on 11/19/2025
The City of New Hope is pleased to announce that Aaron Thelen has been named as its next Parks and Recreation Director.

Aaron has been an essential member of the New Hope Parks and Recreation Department since 2017, when he joined the team as recreation supervisor. Over the past eight years, he has demonstrated strong leadership and innovation in managing a diverse range of recreation programs, facilities, and community events that benefit residents of all ages.

He has led numerous initiatives to expand recreational opportunities, strengthen partnerships with community organizations, and secure grants, sponsorships and donations to support City programs. His efforts have been recognized with multiple Minnesota Recreation and Park Association (MRPA) Awards of Excellence, including honors for the Civic Center Park and Pool Project, the Urban Orchard and the Virtual Bike Rodeo.

Before joining New Hope, Aaron served as a recreation programmer for the City of Arden Hills, where he developed and led youth sports leagues, special events and seasonal programs. He holds a bachelor’s degree in physical education and health education, with a minor in coaching, from the University of Northwestern – St. Paul. Aaron is also a Certified Park and Recreation Professional (CPRP) through the National Recreation and Park Association and is an active member of both the Minnesota and National Recreation and Park Associations.

Aaron will collaborate closely with current Parks and Recreation Director Susan Rader over the coming months to ensure a smooth transition of leadership. Susan has served as New Hope’s Parks and Recreation Director since 2011 and has been with the City since 1989, starting as a temporary recreation supervisor before moving into the role full time. She will retire in February 2026.

“New Hope Parks and Recreation has a long-standing tradition of excellence,” said City Manager Reece Bertholf. “Aaron has been a key contributor to that success, and I am confident that, as a member of the City’s leadership team, he will continue to advance this tradition while driving meaningful improvements for the future. The community is fortunate to have his leadership in ensuring that New Hope’s parks, facilities and programs remain outstanding for residents and regional visitors alike.”
